Book Summary

When Dee Moreno makes a deal with a demon—her heart in exchange for an escape from a disastrous home life—she finds the trade may have been more than she bargained for. And becoming “heartless” is only the beginning. What lies ahead is a nightmare far bigger, far more monstrous than anything she could have ever imagined.

With reality turned on its head, Dee has only a group of other deal-making teens to keep her grounded, including the charming but secretive James Lancer. And as something grows between them amid an otherworldy ordeal, Dee begins to wonder: Can she give someone her heart when it’s no longer hers to give?

Long Review: This book not only came in my OwlCrate this month, but also happened to be this month’s Book Club choice!  We actually picked it for September only to realize that it wasn’t going to be released until early August and that we would have to wait. After waiting on pins and needles to read this book, I was completely surprised in the end.

The writing was very well done throughout the story. It was an effortless read and not once did I think to myself “no one talks like that” during the dialogues.  I really enjoyed how each chapter was like peeling away a layer for each character too. You were given a little bit in the beginning that keeps you wanting more, and you are not let down as to what makes these characters tick. My favorite part was discovering what it was that made it worth losing their heart to a demon for.

What I was not expecting at all was the direction that the book went in.  There was much more fantasy/sci-fi involved in this story than I anticipated.  Now I know what you are thinking, it’s a book about making deals with demons, but it is much more than that.  I will not divulge any more details on the turn it takes as it will take all the surprise from it, but I will say be prepared for unexpected.

I definitely recommend this book for anyone that loves Fantasy or Sci-Fi stories, but if more traditional paranormal and demon stories are your favorite this may not be the book for you.

PS. Be prepared for your heart to ache by the end of this!
